I’m thinking about hopping on the dash cam bandwagon and I’m looking for one that just records video, no fancy smancy GPS or whatever. I’ve read !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and it seems like it’s a decent choice, plus Amazon has it on sale for $50 which isn’t too bad. So is this the best camera to buy? Or could anyone suggest a good camera for under $75 ($100 if it comes with an SD card).

I’ve had my G1W for several months now, the menu is slightly clunky but once set up it works great. Keeps time for weeks without power.

Which one do you have? Mine loses the time and date after a day or so of being off. I have the capacitor model.

I honestly have no idea, but I bought mine in the past year.

After doing some research I’ve heard they crap out after a couple of years. Also which brand of G1W do you have?

I’ve heard stuff like this about G1Ws, I’d also be getting a capacitor model too.

Black Box G1W. Is there more than one brand?

That’s all it says on the box.

Yeah, Spy Tec, E-prance and many others rebrand the G1W, some of them are “fakes” though

Hey I wanted to come back and revisit this. So in my annoyance I started looking online on the GW1 forums on dashcamtalk and it turns out I needed a firmware update! So I did it and now my camera works perfectly, saves the date and I am not missing recordings after 2 days of driving.

To update the firmware is super easy-

format microsd card and place the firmware file in the root of the card. Place microsd card in the camera before it turns on and when it’s supposed to turn on it’ll stay “off” or seemingly off since the screen won’t turn on for about 2 minutes after which it will start right up

Then format the card again by using the option in the settings of the camera and set your date and voila. Perfect.

Hm... so that possibly alleviates one of my main concerns about the G1W, my only issue is that I’m so busy that if this happened to me I wouldn’t have time to even deal with it. I’m still very likely to get a capacitor model though.

After finding the answer it took me less than 5 mins to do in the morning before heading to work. Not sure why mine shipped with firmware from 2014 but it did lol I just never looked into it.

Hm that doesn’t seem too bad. I’ll put the G1W-CB back on my list.
